It revealed that any nuclear conflict—no matter how limited—would lead to total annihilation of most of the Northern Hemisphere. The 1983 simulation showed that regardless of the initial cause, all scenarios converged into the same outcome. This outcome was massive death and destruction. No side would be left intact. Annie Jacobsen, in her 2024 book 'Nuclear War - A Scenario,' summarized these findings. She highlighted that such a war would result in a death toll of at least 500 million people in the initial stages. It would also cause widespread starvation and the collapse of human populations.
Paul Bracken, a participant in this simulation, is a professor at Yale. He emphasized the severity of the results. He described the destruction from the war game as so immense. It rendered all wars in the past 500 years insignificant in comparison. The simulation also showed the environmental fallout. It would render most of the Northern Hemisphere uninhabitable. Bracken pointed out the death toll of at least half a billion in the war’s first stages. It would be followed by the collapse of food systems. This would lead to the near-complete eradication of the human species.

In 1960, a Pentagon scientist named Herb York conducted a study to determine how quickly a missile fired from the Soviet Union would reach a U.S. city. At that time, the missile took 26 minutes and 40 seconds to travel. Today, the speed and proximity of new launch capabilities have significantly reduced this time. These submarines are capable of striking multiple key locations simultaneously, making the destruction of a country possible in a matter of minutes.
Ted Postol, a former senior advisor to the U.S. Navy, provided further insights into the rapid deployment of submarine-launched missiles. He explained that a Russian submarine could launch all of its missiles at intervals of about five seconds each, unloading its arsenal in just 80 seconds. This speed allows for a devastating attack to be executed in an extremely short time, raising the chances of rapid escalation. Additionally, the deployment of U.S. and French nuclear weapons in European countries has made the travel time from launch site to target even shorter. This technological advancement has significantly increased the potential for rapid and large-scale nuclear exchanges.
