The 2026 men’s World Cup kicked off in the United States with a powerful surge in viewership, setting new standards right from the start. The opening game on June 11 between Mexico and South Africa drew a massive audience, with 13.4 million viewers tuning in for the Spanish-language coverage on Telemundo and Peacock, and 7.19 million watching the English-language version on Fox. These numbers marked a record for the first game of the World Cup in the U.S., and the Spanish-language broadcast also became the most-watched World Cup game in the country on any Spanish-language platform.

However, this record was short-lived. Just seven days later, Mexico's next match broke the same mark. As the tournament unfolded, both Fox and Telemundo continued to outperform all expectations, with their combined audience for the July 19 final reaching a staggering 62.8 million viewers. This number far surpassed the previous record of 26.7 million for the 2015 women's World Cup final and the 25.78 million set during the 2022 men’s final.

North America's Time Advantage

The decision to host the World Cup in North America gave the event a unique advantage. For the first time in recent memory, most matches aired in the afternoon and evening, making them much more accessible to U.S. audiences compared to the often inconvenient time slots used in previous tournaments held in other time zones. This scheduling change played a significant role in drawing in record crowds for nearly every game.

In addition, Nielsen’s updated methods for measuring live TV viewership gave ratings a modest boost. However, even without these changes, the success of the tournament was undeniable. The top 11 matches of the World Cup — chosen to represent the 11 players on each team — all delivered staggering audiences, proving just how popular the event had become.

Expanding the field from 32 to 48 teams brought more action to the screen, which also led to more opportunities for record-breaking moments. The average viewership across all 104 matches was 14.04 million, with Fox averaging 7.74 million viewers and Telemundo and Peacock averaging 6.3 million viewers.

Digital platforms were just as busy as the traditional TV broadcasts. Over 77.2 billion minutes of World Cup coverage were consumed across Telemundo, Peacock, Universo, and other digital platforms, nearly doubling the combined total from the 2018 and 2022 tournaments.

The digital reach of the event was equally impressive. FIFA's official YouTube channel saw 4 billion views during the tournament, with more than 1.7 billion unique viewers from around the world engaging with World Cup-related videos. The final match's 40 official broadcasts alone attracted an average of 21 million viewers worldwide.

Fox Sports reported 17.2 billion views of World Cup content across its digital and social media channels, while Telemundo's social platforms saw an explosive ninefold increase in viewership compared to the 2022 and 2018 tournaments, reaching 2.25 billion video views in just one cycle.

The World Cup didn’t just top sports events — it also outperformed some of the most popular cultural events in recent memory. The Spain-Argentina final alone outperformed four major telecasts since January 2024, including the previous three Super Bowls (which each drew more than 120 million viewers) and the September 2024 presidential debate, which reached 67.14 million viewers across 17 networks.
