The essentials
  • Foden, who has won 20 major trophies at City, will stay at the Etihad until 2030.
  • Maresca, returning to the club after a stint in Italy, will take over from Pep Guardiola in the summer.

Foden's focus on the future

Phil Foden, 26, a key figure in Manchester City’s remarkable success, has signed a new deal to stay with the club until 2030. The contract offers better terms than before, with Foden deciding to remain with the blue half of the city even after not being selected for the 2022 World Cup team.

The midfielder described his choice as deeply personal and meaningful. 'Committing my future to City means everything to me,' he said. He highlighted working with Enzo Maresca once more as a major reason behind his decision.

Maresca’s return sees new leadership

Maresca, now 46, is coming back to the club where he previously coached under Pep Guardiola. He replaces the iconic manager, who guided City to 10 major titles in four years, including the historic treble in 2022–23.

Foden spoke highly of Maresca’s role in that Treble season, calling him 'brilliant' and someone 'respected and loved by all the players.' He is confident that Maresca will help the team continue its success as they step into a fresh era at the Etihad.

Director of football backs Foden’s growth

Hugo Viana, Manchester City’s director of football, praised Foden for his skill, dedication, and humility. Viana noted that Foden’s progress has come from starting young and learning from top coaches and players.

Viana emphasized Foden’s continued development. 'At 26, his journey is far from over, and we’re excited to see what he becomes in the years ahead.'
