Belfast is playing host to Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann, the world’s largest gathering of Irish music and culture, beginning today. The festival runs until 9 August and is expected to draw up to 800,000 visitors, with over 200 events and 180 traditional music competitions spread across the city.
This is the first time Belfast has welcomed the festival, and it is taking place in Ireland’s only UNESCO City of Music. The event will fill the city with traditional music, dance, and language, with performances in pubs, on streets, and at large venues.
One of the main attractions is the Gig Rig, the festival’s outdoor stage set against Belfast City Hall. It will feature live traditional music daily from 11am to 11pm, with no tickets required. Names like Sharon Shannon will perform at this free venue.
Whether you are a seasoned traditional music fan or visiting for the first time, the festival promises a full immersion into the sounds and spirit of Irish culture. The event will return to Belfast next year for another installment.
