A New Life for a Classic
The Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre has brought Cats back in a bold new way. Under the direction of Drew McOnie, the production is a high-energy explosion of movement and feline flair. This version breaks from the overly structured choreography of the 2019 movie, instead giving the felines a raw, untamed feel. These cats now move as if they truly belong in the London alleyways they represent, not as trained dancers but as free-spirited creatures.
The Cast and Characters
McOnie's direction has the ensemble act like real cats, leading to a performance full of instinctive, unrehearsed-like moments. Jaydon Vijn stands out as the charismatic Rum Tum Tugger, capturing a modern, stylish vibe. On press night, understudy Taziva-Faye Katsande takes over as Grizabella, delivering a tender and emotional portrayal. Melanie La Barrie brings a warm gravitas to Old Deuteronomy, the leader of the Jellicles, even if the character is older in the original source material.
The stage is set with a minimalist moon-shaped design by Sami Fendall, giving the production a dreamlike edge. Above the stage, two moons—actual and set—add to the surreal atmosphere. McOnie’s choreography is the heart of the show, with the cast moving in a feral, instinctive style that feels like watching real cats in motion rather than performers in a dance routine.
Katsande’s performance of 'Memory' is a standout moment, showcasing her powerful voice and emotional depth. However, her youth contrasts with the age and experience Grizabella is meant to embody. Similarly, La Barrie, while only 51, portrays Old Deuteronomy with dignity, but the character in Eliot's poems is far older. These casting choices may raise questions among audiences familiar with the source material.
Despite these casting considerations, the production holds on to the mystical and abstract tone of Eliot’s original poems. The show offers a fresh yet familiar experience, with characters developing through song and dance. The Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre will continue to run Cats until 19 September, giving musical theatre fans the chance to witness this new take on the beloved production.
