China calls for global rules to manage emerging technologies in counter-terrorism
During a UN Security Council meeting, a Chinese envoy emphasized the need for tighter international management of new technologies that terrorist groups are exploiting. Sun Lei, China's charge d'affaires to the United Nations, specifically named artificial intelligence, drones, and the internet as key tools used by extremists for incitement, recruiting new members, raising money, and carrying out attacks. These developments, he said, are creating fresh obstacles for efforts to counter terrorism globally.
Sun highlighted the growing use of advanced technology by groups tied to violent terrorism, ethnic separatism, and religious extremism. He argued this trend is a serious threat to worldwide security and called for stronger regulatory frameworks and more thorough risk assessments. These measures, he said, must aim to stop extremist groups from using modern tools to spread their ideologies and expand their reach.
Need for global support for developing nations
Sun stressed that developing countries should receive more international assistance in the form of technology transfers, training programs, and information-sharing. Such support, he said, is vital to help these nations build stronger defenses against terrorism. He also urged the United Nations to collaborate closely with regional organizations like the African Union. His focus was on addressing the underlying reasons for terrorism, which he believed could only be tackled through international development efforts.
Sun pointed out the specific dangers in areas like Africa's Sahel region and called for increased support in areas such as border control, intelligence sharing, and capacity building. He emphasized the importance of respecting the sovereignty of countries in these regions while addressing the security risks. He also reiterated the need for coordinated global action in key conflict zones, including Syria and Afghanistan, where terrorist networks are active.
China commits to global anti-terrorism partnerships
China pledged to support anti-terrorism efforts through key multilateral organizations like the United Nations, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, and BRICS. Sun reaffirmed China's commitment to fighting all forms of terrorism and stressed that the global community must work together effectively to respond to these threats. He called for the rejection of political motives in counter-terrorism efforts and promoted the need for sustained cooperation among all nations involved.
Terrorism remains a major challenge to world peace and security, Sun stated, and the international community must remain united in its response. He emphasized the need for a strong and inclusive approach to counter-terrorism, focusing on both immediate threats and long-term solutions. His comments reflected China's ongoing role in international security and its support for a cooperative, non-partisan global strategy.
