The $1 million in support highlights the increasing influence of digital assets in shaping political campaigns, particularly in the 2026 election cycle. The spending has drawn attention to how both Democratic and Republican candidates are now positioning themselves around the needs of the cryptocurrency sector.
As a sitting Democratic representative, Thanedar has consistently supported legislative efforts that align with pro-crypto interests. He backed the GENIUS Act, which addresses stablecoins, as well as the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act, which is being considered in the Senate. Additionally, Thanedar cosponsored the Promoting Innovation in Blockchain Development Act, an effort designed to shield blockchain developers from excessive regulatory burdens. These actions have placed him in a favorable light with crypto advocates and their financial backers.
Fairshake’s deepening election role
The $1 million spent by Protect Progress, a political committee, is part of a broader strategy by Fairshake, the larger organization behind it. According to the FEC, Fairshake spent over $170 million in the 2024 election cycle supporting candidates who share its pro-crypto stance. As of 2026, the group has already funneled more than $82 million into various races across the country, including Michigan, Texas, and Illinois. With a reported $193 million in financial reserves as of January, Fairshake remains a major force in the political landscape.
Republican lawmakers attract crypto cash
While Democrats like Thanedar are active in crypto-related legislation, Republicans have also found support from the same financial sources. In Alabama, the Defend American Jobs PAC, another affiliate of Fairshake, spent $511,000 promoting Jerry Carl Jr., a former member of Congress with a reported net worth of $15 million. Carl, who represented Alabama’s 1st congressional district, is being positioned as a key candidate in the state’s August 11 primary. His high net worth underscores the wealth of some lawmakers who have drawn backing from the crypto community.
The same Defend American Jobs PAC also allocated $65,000 to support a Republican candidate in Washington state’s 4th congressional district. With Washington’s primary taking place on the same day as Michigan’s, the timing reflects a strategic effort to maximize exposure across multiple races. These spending patterns reveal how the crypto industry is aligning itself with both major political parties.
The growing presence of digital assets in politics shows that the sector is no longer a niche interest. Instead, it has become a powerful force with millions of dollars behind it. Candidates from both the Democratic and Republican parties are now adjusting their campaign strategies to meet the demands of this influential voting bloc.
