Creating a Custom Household Management App Using AI
A few months ago, a desire for a more comprehensive household management system led to the decision of building a custom solution using AI tools like Claude. The aim was to efficiently track family calendars, set and monitor family goals, and manage household inventory, all while adapting to the specific structure of the home. The system needed to be flexible enough to accommodate the number of family members, pets, and rooms in the house. Existing apps didn’t quite meet these expectations, so the user opted to create a personalized solution that better aligned with their unique needs.
Several existing apps were tested, including Cozi Family Organizer, OurHome, and Sweepy. While Sweepy provided a highly customizable chores list and calendar, it didn’t offer a household inventory feature. On the other hand, Cozi had a shopping list system, but it required manual entry of tasks. Though these apps came close to fulfilling the user’s needs, they were missing key components. For example, Sweepy allowed for chore customization but fell short in tracking household items, while Cozi’s inventory system lacked automation and ease of use.
The biggest challenge with current apps was the lack of a pre-filled inventory list that could be modified to meet specific needs. Additionally, some of the better features were behind a paywall, requiring premium subscriptions. This prompted the user to combine the best features from multiple apps into a single, unified platform. They realized the necessary tools were spread across different apps, so developing a custom solution that integrated all desired functions became the next step.
How the Custom App Was Built
The first attempt involved creating an Android app using Claude Code. However, building an Android app from scratch with an AI tool proved to be a lengthy process that required additional tools like Android Studio. The user started by creating a detailed plan in the form of a Google Sheet that outlined all the core features and how they should be presented. While Claude could assist with coding, it couldn’t generate a fully functioning Android app on its own. This meant the user had to manually input much of the work, which significantly slowed the development process. The result was an initial alpha build that, while functional, still lacked many of the features the user envisioned.
Given the challenges with building an Android app, the user opted to create a progressive web app instead, which offered a more straightforward and faster development process. The web app was built using a simple back-and-forth coding method, making it user-friendly and accessible. However, the downside was that the app had to be opened in a browser to function. After testing and refining the initial web app, the user chose to convert it into a progressive web app for improved usability. The web app was manageable to build, required fewer external tools, and allowed for rapid iteration and improvements over time. This shift allowed the user to prototype and test features much more efficiently, which was crucial for the development process.
The final result was a flexible, evolving solution that could be updated as needed. The user could now add new features directly without relying on app developers to make those changes. The project demonstrated how AI tools like Claude can assist in building tailored solutions, even for those without professional development experience. The user now uses the app daily and continues to refine it by incorporating new ideas and features. This approach has proven to be both practical and adaptable, meeting the user’s needs in ways that existing apps could not. The ongoing development highlights the user’s commitment to creating a tool that aligns with the unique demands of their household.
