The consensus in the biathlon world is that individual performances like Philipp Horn’s first World Cup podium should be celebrated as a sign of progress. But yet, the broader reality remains that the German team as a whole underperformed, achieving what some call an 'historic low.' Horn's achievement didn’t mask the fact that the German team, men's and women's combined, went the 2022/23 season without a single World Cup victory. That’s the longest dry spell in over a decade, and the first zero-win season in decades. The numbers don’t lie — and neither does the growing sense among fans and analysts that something is fundamentally wrong.
For Horn, the breakthrough was both a personal milestone and a long-awaited validation. At 31 years old, he described the win as the culmination of years of near misses and hard work. 'I had often the feeling I had the potential,' he told SPORT1, acknowledging the difficulty of staying competitive in a sport where consistency is everything. While Horn trains, he also runs. Not on the track, but at the construction site of a new sports hotel in Oberhof, a project he's developing with his wife. It’s a side venture that has taken up many of his hours, especially during the off-season. According to Horn, they're on the final stretch of the project, though delays pushed the opening back from its original deadline. The hotel is meant to support the community — and maybe, one day, provide a training facility for athletes who look like he once did: ambitious, hungry, and just starting.
The contrast is telling. As Germany's top biathletes struggle to win, Horn is building something new. That duality — of athletes competing and athletes creating — points to a deeper issue in the sport. If the national team is a sinking ship, what are the lifelines? Past Setbacks Remain
When asked about his fourth-place finish at the Olympics, Horn says it doesn't weigh on him — but it’s clear the memory still lingers. 'It was a crazy experience,' he said. He had made it to the Games in 2018 and 2022, but failed to make an impact. This time, he had expectations — and almost fulfilled them. The team worked on mental preparation before the mass start, and Horn says he focused hard, even after the relay team's underwhelming performance. That kind of psychological management, he suggests, might be the missing piece.
Looking Ahead
His coach, Tobias Reiter, has made no attempt to sugarcoat the situation. 'We have a lot of work to do,' he said in a post-season review. But Horn remains optimistic. Whether that optimism is justified depends on what the DSV does next.
