Google Shuts Down Groundbreaking AlphaFold Project to Shift Focus to Gemini
The DeepMind team that spearheaded the development of AlphaFold has been officially disbanded, with many of its core researchers either reassigned or leaving the company altogether. According to a report from the Financial Times, key members of the team, including original researchers, have been moved to Gemini-related projects or transferred to Alphabet's spin-off Isomorphic Labs, a drug-discovery venture. This restructuring marks a strategic pivot as Google aims to channel resources into its Gemini AI system.
AlphaFold was hailed as a revolutionary breakthrough in structural biology. The AI could predict protein structures with incredible speed, reducing a process that once took years to just minutes. Its capabilities have already made a significant impact, providing scientists with over 200 million predicted protein structures. These insights have accelerated drug development, improved vaccine design, and deepened understanding of neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. By 2020, AlphaFold was credited with solving a 50-year-old problem in biology: how amino acids naturally fold into precise 3D configurations, which ultimately define a protein’s function.
DeepMind is now steering its efforts toward its next-gen AI system, Gemini. Pushmeet Kohli, DeepMind's VP of research, stated that the company's strategy has evolved over the past nine years to concentrate on major, goal-oriented projects. As part of this shift, many AlphaFold team members have already been reassigned to Gemini, with others now working on projects across Alphabet's ecosystem. The company has confirmed these changes to the Times, signaling a broader move away from its earlier groundbreaking work.
Despite receiving a Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2024 for their contributions to AlphaFold, DeepMind's leadership is shifting its research focus. DeepMind's CEO, Demis Hassabis, and John Jumper, who was a staff scientist at the project's launch and later became a VP and engineering fellow, were among the recipients. Jumper recently left DeepMind to join Anthropic, and several colleagues have followed. Their departure, along with the reassignment of others, underscores a strategic evolution in Google's AI ambitions, as it leans more heavily into Gemini and future technologies.
