By the third day of repeated use, the time filters within Google Search had completely failed to function as intended. Rather than narrowing search results to the specified timeframe, the filters now deliver a jumbled mix of pages from any date. This issue isn’t confined to a single browser or search query — it appears to be a system-wide problem affecting users globally.
How the filters broke down
Google Search once provided a straightforward way for users to choose options like 'Past hour,' 'Past week,' or even define a custom time range to narrow results. However, these tools now return results that bypass the selected time window entirely. The inconsistency disrupts the user experience, making it difficult to find up-to-date or historical information with accuracy.
Instead of limiting results to, say, the last 24 hours, searches are pulling in pages with random dates — some are outdated, and others are recent — as if the system has lost the ability to organize by time. Users have confirmed on Reddit that they are seeing the same erratic behavior, with reports showing the issue has persisted for at least several days.
The only working solution so far
To bypass the malfunctioning dropdown menu, users can now manually add 'after:YYYY-MM-DD' or 'before:YYYY-MM-DD' directly into their search queries. This method works because it circumvents the JavaScript code that appears to be at the root of the problem. A Reddit user pointed out that the search operators still function properly, but the user interface has clearly failed.
Until Google rolls out a fix, users must rely on this manual workaround if they want to access recent or historical information with precision. As of now, the company has not yet released a statement confirming or addressing the bug.
The widespread nature of the error suggests a significant issue within Google’s Search infrastructure, impacting multiple devices, user accounts, and search terms. Despite this, the manual date operators offer a viable solution, at least temporarily, for users who need time-sensitive results.
