Graphics cards are about to become more expensive for PC users. Nvidia has confirmed a significant price increase for its GPUs, with reports suggesting hikes of 20% to 30%. Soon after, AMD announced its own price adjustment, though it's reportedly more moderate at a minimum of 10%.
According to reports, AMD had planned its own price rise but delayed it until after Nvidia made its move. Analysts say the increases will start this week and affect partners first. These partners will then set their own prices for consumers, with little room to absorb the higher costs.
Memory shortages and rising prices
The main reason for the hikes is a surge in demand for high-speed memory chips, which are essential for graphics cards. Samsung, a major supplier, has already raised memory prices and plans a further 20% increase this month. These price changes are expected to last until at least 2028.
Console makers feel the pressure
Console manufacturers are also feeling the hit. Microsoft raised the price of the Xbox Series X and S at the start of the month, and Nintendo is preparing to do the same with its new Switch 2. Sony had already increased the PlayStation 5’s cost earlier this year. All three companies may face more price changes if memory costs keep rising.
