When Kanye West released Vultures 2, his second collaborative album with Ty Dolla $ign, in 2024, critics and fans were already questioning whether AI had been used to deepfake his voice. Now, a new lawsuit filed by a producer adds weight to those claims. The producer, who claims he contributed to the album, filed an anonymous suit in Los Angeles’ Superior Court. He alleges he was brought in on an urgent basis just two days before the album dropped.
According to reports, the producer claims he worked on five tracks from the album. He created at least 13 custom AI voice models and generated over 400 vocal lines using his own voice. He also contributed AI programming to West’s most recent solo album, Bully, starting in October 2024. The producer has not been paid for his work and is not credited on streaming services. He claims this violates his contract and California labor laws.
The suit seeks over $110,000 in damages for breach of contract and other violations. West had insisted that Bully did not use AI. Even though he has publicly discussed using the technology in his creative process. In recent months, West has faced a string of legal issues. These include a settled 2024 sexual misconduct lawsuit and a court ruling over an uncleared sample. This cost him almost $200,000.
This lawsuit brings further scrutiny to how AI is being integrated into music production and whether the people behind those technologies are being fairly credited and compensated.
