Promotion prospects hinge on funding
24 clubs in the Super League are vying for top-tier status, but London Broncos have confirmed automatic promotion remains an option. Reports had indicated the club would not be allowed automatic entry, forcing them to depend on other clubs failing reviews. Co-owners Darren Lockyer and Grant Wechsel countered these claims.
According to City AM, promotion for the Broncos could happen if the central funds distributed to other clubs remain intact. Betfred's expiring sponsorship offer presents a chance to increase the price in the next market offering.
Club owners stress the importance of financial balance
Darren Lockyer stated, “If the pot is big enough to grow the game by one or two teams next year, the game’s willing to look at expansion.” Grant Wechsel added that other Super League clubs support the Broncos’ inclusion but are not prepared to lose their own financial positions.
Wechsel said, “We’re hoping over the next four, six, eight weeks to be a lot clearer over what that pot looks like.” The co-owners are prioritizing financial stability as a prerequisite for expansion.
Logistical challenges remain a hurdle
The London Broncos currently share a stadium with AFC Wimbledon, limiting their home games for months each year. This has led to a search for a new permanent home.
Grant Wechsel described the current situation as a logistical challenge. “There is also no football and no rugby union so if we are going to capture London we need to be able to play at home in that period and we haven’t played at Wimbledon since May.”
The need for an independent stadium is a key step in the Broncos’ effort to expand their base in London and improve their standing in the Super League.
Super League discussions involving the Australian NRL are ongoing, as the league seeks to grow its global influence. Lockyer added that the new broadcast deal in Australia will help the game and the Broncos' cause.
