The Final Ascent marks the last major update for Peak, a co-op 'friendslop' experience that has sold more than 10 million units in its first year on the market. Set to arrive on August 11, the update replaces the existing late-game biomes Caldera and The Kiln with two new environments: Gloom and The Citadel. Gloom appears as a ghostly swamp, while The Citadel is described as a medieval fortress featuring deadly traps like swinging flails. The trailer also previews a mysterious monster that seems poised to chase players through the terrain, adding an extra layer of difficulty.
Peak’s journey has been impressive, starting as a game-jam experiment before becoming a surprise hit upon its official release. The game’s success reached a new height when it partnered with Fortnite in a collaboration that surpassed the original game’s budget. Part of this success has been attributed to the game’s low price point. One developer explained that to many players, anything costing under $8 still feels like it costs $5. That pricing strategy helped Peak reach a massive audience and sell millions of copies.
The game hit its one-year anniversary in June but has never been positioned as a live-service title. Developers from both Aggro Crab and Landfall Games have made it clear that in 2026, the pace of updates will significantly slow. Across multiple Steam posts, they've referred to The Final Ascent as the last major content addition for Peak. Both studios are now shifting focus to new projects. Alongside other titles like REPO and Content Warning, Peak has played a major role in bringing the 'friendslop' genre into the mainstream. As the subgenre grows, some observers have suggested it might be time for a new name to better reflect its identity.
