The essentials
  • Galaxy Aero codename found in Galaxy Wearable app code
  • Device could use real-time OS for better battery life and lower price

RTOS vs Wear OS: What's the difference

This new device might skip Google's Wear OS in favor of a Real-Time Operating System (RTOS). The RTOS is used in the Galaxy Fit line and is known for low power consumption and long battery life.

RTOS-powered devices are designed to perform specific tasks efficiently. They typically use less power and are cheaper to build. Galaxy Aero appears to use this system, unlike the more complex Wear OS found on flagship Galaxy Watches. This means longer battery life and a lower price.

Positioning in the product line

If released, Galaxy Aero could sit between the Galaxy Fit 4 and Galaxy Watch FE. The Fit 4 is expected to be a budget fitness tracker, while the Watch FE is a more advanced but still affordable smartwatch. Galaxy Aero appears to offer features in between.

Galaxy Aero is likely a smartwatch with standard sensors such as heart rate monitors and accelerometers. It won’t be a screenless fitness band. Instead, it may use a form factor similar to the Watch FE but with simpler hardware and software.

Unconfirmed but intriguing

The details about Galaxy Aero are still early and unconfirmed. The codename appears in code for Samsung’s Galaxy Wearable app, but the company hasn’t officially announced the device. If real, Galaxy Aero could address a missing product segment in Samsung’s wearable lineup.

Samsung last launched a dedicated fitness tracker in 2024 with the Galaxy Fit 3. A new RTOS-powered smartwatch could provide a fresh option for users looking for something more advanced than a basic tracker but cheaper than a full smartwatch.

The benchmark

RTOS, 1 week of battery, Galaxy Fit 3 2024
