New partnership expands theatre access in Toronto
This fall will mark the start of a groundbreaking theatrical collaboration in Toronto as the Shaw Festival and Harbourfront Centre unveil a three-year artistic residency. As part of this initiative, two productions—Sleuth and A Christmas Carol—will make their way to the Harbourfront Centre Theatre, a versatile venue known for hosting theatre, dance, and music performances along the waterfront all year long.
Tim Carroll, the Artistic Director of the Shaw Festival, emphasized the striking contrast between the two plays while noting their equally compelling qualities. Sleuth, a modern thriller penned by Anthony Shaffer, and A Christmas Carol, a beloved holiday classic, will both be adapted to the new stage. These adaptations are designed to showcase the Shaw Festival's artistic excellence and introduce a fresh experience to Toronto's theatre-goers.
Fall schedule and performance details
The Sleuth production will open on October 18, following a brief preview period from October 16 to 17, and will run until November 1. Directed by Peter Fernandes, the play is coming from its critically praised run at the Court House Theatre, where it was performed until October 9. Sleuth is a sharp, stylish Tony and Edgar Award-winning play that promises a thrilling and suspenseful experience.
A Christmas Carol will have an extended run, starting with previews from November 12 to 19, followed by an opening night on November 20, and closing on December 23. Artistic Director Tim Carroll will direct this annual production, which is being reimagined for the Fleck Theatre stage at Harbourfront Centre. The play will transport audiences to a cold, lonely Christmas Eve and bring them to the moment of transformation for Ebenezer Scrooge.
The third play in the residency will be revealed in October, as outlined on the Harbourfront Centre’s website. In the meantime, subscription packages are available for purchase, and individual tickets can also be booked.

In 2026, the Shaw Festival will stage a variety of plays in Niagara-on-the-Lake, including Sleuth, A Christmas Carol, Funny Girl, and several other notable works. The festival is also engaged in an ambitious campaign called All.Together.Now., which focuses on creating new spaces and programs to foster human connections and rekindle creativity in the community.
