The UK’s Pioneering Smart Home: Cragside
Cragside, nestled on a rocky hillside in Northumberland, is often considered the first smart home in the UK. It belonged to Lord William Armstrong, a prominent industrialist and engineer. Known for founding the Elswick Works in Newcastle, Armstrong made significant contributions to hydraulic machinery, shipbuilding, and weaponry. His innovations included the hydraulic accumulator and the operating mechanism of London's Tower Bridge. Cragside was not just a home but a personal laboratory for testing hydraulic and electrical theories he developed for industrial applications. By 1868, a hydraulic engine was already installed to perform domestic tasks, powering laundry machines, a lift, and even a rotisserie. The house functioned as a practical lab, proving his theories in everyday life. Water from the estate’s artificial lakes was later harnessed to power arc lamps and, eventually, Joseph Swan’s new incandescent lamps.
Cragside’s pioneering energy use continued into the modern era. In 2014, a 17m-long Archimedes screw hydro-turbine was installed, reviving the estate’s renewable energy legacy. This system generates about 10kW of electricity, providing enough power to illuminate all 350 lightbulbs in the main house. The original Victorian pump house and turbines are still preserved and accessible to the public through the National Trust. Recognizing Cragside’s groundbreaking engineering, the estate received an IMechE Engineering Heritage Award in 1985. Its history continues to inspire, showcasing the early use of hydroelectric power and innovative engineering.
