Tennessee is among the five final candidates competing to host a $50 billion Nuclear Lifecycle Center. This groundbreaking facility is designed to collect and recycle spent nuclear fuel, potentially injecting a major economic boost into the region and generating almost 25,000 new jobs in the process.

The state’s status as a finalist was announced during the Nuclear Opportunities Workshop in Knoxville. Governor Bill Lee and Department of Energy Assistant Secretary Tim Walsh made the announcement at the Knoxville Convention Center, where they also noted that no site has been officially selected yet.

Community Input is a Priority for Governor Lee

Governor Lee emphasized that Tennessee won’t proceed with the project without meaningful community involvement. 'It’s also important that we remember safety, the natural resources, the environment, the protection of all of those,' Lee said, highlighting the importance of transparency and public understanding.

Walsh backed this approach, reiterating the federal government’s stance. 'We’re not forcing this on anybody,' he said. 'It’s something that we want to have strong community engagement and stakeholder engagement.' The pair stressed that the project would not be pushed onto any community.

Assistant Secretary Walsh also worked to dispel common concerns over spent nuclear fuel. He argued that the term 'nuclear waste' is misleading. He added that 'there is still a lot of energy left in that,' suggesting the material can be repurposed effectively.

The ultimate aim, according to Walsh, is to provide more affordable energy for Americans. He connected this to broader goals, including improved living standards and economic growth across the country.

Roane County Executive Wade Creswell said his county is already preparing for the potential of hosting the site. Plans are underway for key infrastructure improvements, such as road upgrades, to support what could become a major regional development.

Lee acknowledged that major questions remain unresolved. The next steps are still being debated, and the state is waiting for answers before moving forward.

Tennessee’s existing role in nuclear research gives it a unique position in the competition. The state, and particularly Oak Ridge, have a long history in nuclear innovation. The Nuclear Opportunities Workshop brought together local and federal leaders to explore how this project might fit into the region’s future.

“We’re not forcing this on anybody. It’s something that we want to have strong community engagement and stakeholder engagement.”
The other side

Opponents remain concerned about potential risks to local communities and the environment. These issues will need to be addressed before any final decision is made.
