Military's Creative Request
According to CNN, the US Central Command has reached out to military analysts in search of novel and inventive ways to pressure and punish Iran. The request was initiated by a senior officer in Centcom’s intelligence division, who emailed a wide network of analysts last week. This move comes as the US military rethinks its overall strategy, moving beyond the traditional reliance on airstrikes. The email sent on Wednesday explicitly asked for unconventional tactics that could be used to exert pressure on Iran. A Centcom spokesperson later defended the effort, emphasizing the command’s history of encouraging creative thinking and innovation. The commander, Admiral Cooper, is known for regularly soliciting input from military personnel at all levels to enhance performance and adapt to changing conditions.
Airstrikes and Strategy
These efforts are part of a broader campaign aimed at weakening Iran’s influence and compelling it to return to diplomatic talks. Despite these military actions, however, the desired outcome has not been achieved. Washington remains determined to find a resolution, but the current strategy has not produced the breakthrough needed to bring Tehran to the negotiating table. US intelligence agencies have also voiced skepticism about the effectiveness of continued airstrikes in altering Iran’s position.
Despite concerns about the limited success of the air campaign, President Donald Trump has been considering expanding the military effort. He has hinted at the possibility of targeting Iranian nuclear sites, which would mark a significant escalation. Some of these facilities are believed to be buried deep underground, making them difficult to destroy without a ground invasion. Such a move would go against Trump’s public reluctance to deploy large numbers of US troops into foreign conflicts.
Challenges and Considerations
One of the options currently being evaluated by Centcom is a week- or two-week-long bombing campaign targeting Iran’s missile systems. This strategy aims to cripple Iran’s ability to retaliate or project power. Another concern involves the potential for civilian casualties if strikes expand to critical infrastructure, such as bridges and desalination plants. Such attacks could lead to international condemnation and increased hostility toward the US.
Deploying US ground troops is another possible step in the military campaign. Trump has mentioned the idea of occupying strategic areas like Kharg Island or securing Iran’s highly enriched uranium reserves. However, these actions would conflict with his pledge to avoid long-term military engagements. He has also criticized previous US interventions that turned into open-ended wars, such as those in Iraq and Afghanistan. A prolonged cycle of American strikes followed by Iranian retaliation could lead to a protracted conflict, which Trump is keen to avoid. At a recent Cabinet meeting, he stated, âI think we just want to win,â and added that the US would continue to strike Iran until Tehran decides it can no longer withstand the pressure.
