USA Triathlon Nationals Set for Milwaukee in August 2026 with Expanded Schedule

The city of Milwaukee will once more host the USA Triathlon Nationals in August 2026. The event has grown to three days, from Aug. 7 to Aug. 9, and is now the largest single event in the USA Triathlon annual lineup. This year's championships will include a broader array of competitions and will offer a complete weekend of triathlon activity with various race formats.

Making their debut at the event are two new competitions: the Draft Legal Sprint Triathlon National Championships and the Mixed Relay Triathlon National Championships. These new additions enhance the diversity of races and the total number of athletes taking part in the event. With these new events, more participants across all skill levels have a chance to compete at the national level.

Event Details and Activities

The competition is projected to attract over 4,000 athletes to the Milwaukee lakefront for a complete weekend of triathlon action. The weekend will kick off with a swim in Lake Michigan, followed by a challenging bike ride across the Daniel Hoan Memorial Bridge and a final run through Veterans Park. Athletes will race along a course that blends physical challenges with impressive views.

This will be the fifth time Milwaukee has served as the host city, with earlier appearances from 2013 to 2015, again in 2021 to 2023, and in 2025. With support from Sports Milwaukee and Visit Milwaukee, as well as other local and county partners, the 2026 event continues to build on Milwaukee's well-established ability to host the event. The collaboration between local organizations and agencies has been essential in ensuring the success of past events and the upcoming 2026 championships.

Brian D’Amico, the director of events at USA Triathlon, praised Milwaukee for its course, its local collaborations, and the overall ambiance. The lakefront, he noted, is more than just a picturesque setting; it also serves as a key part of the race and a gathering point for both athletes and fans. D’Amico expressed enthusiasm for the expanded 2026 schedule and Milwaukee's growing status as a premier location for national triathlon events.

Marissa Werner of Sports Milwaukee highlighted the city's deep commitment to the event. “We know how to welcome athletes,” she stated. The aim, she added, is to give athletes more chances to compete in a city that they already respect and enjoy.

Notable Features and Prize Opportunities

One of the highlights of the 2026 event will be the Jarrett Sepulveda Paratriathlon Prize Purse. This initiative offers prize money to the top finishers in six classifications for paratriathletes. Athletes with visual impairments will also benefit, as sighted guides who support them during the race will receive the same prize amounts. This program promotes inclusivity and acknowledges the efforts of those who assist visually impaired competitors.

One of the returning top athletes is Dr. Jacob Capin, a seven-time USA Triathlon national champion and a five-time winner at the IRONMAN 70.3. He described the Milwaukee course as “fast, demanding, and incredibly scenic,” and he looks forward to competing there again in 2026. Capin earned the title of USA Triathlon’s 2025 Triathlete of the Year after capturing the Olympic Distance National Championship in Milwaukee that year.

Returning and New Competitions

Capin will compete in the Olympic Distance National Championships, but the 2026 event will provide him and others with more opportunities. The Mixed Relay National Championships and the Paratriathlon National Championships will take place over the weekend as well. Spectators will be able to view the races from designated areas along the course. The weekend will highlight a wide selection of triathlon formats and include events for participants at all levels.

One of the standout elements of the event will be the striking skyline of Milwaukee. Capin emphasized that the city's visual appeal enhances the overall experience. “Racing in a place you consider home makes it even more special,” he said. With a well-organized schedule and a passionate local community, the 2026 USA Triathlon Nationals is expected to deliver a memorable and elite-level competition for athletes and spectators alike.

The event will open on Friday, Aug. Saturday will include the Olympic Distance National Championships and the Mixed Relay Triathlon National Championships, while Sunday will feature the Sprint-Distance National Championships and the Paratriathlon National Championships. The events will be held on the Milwaukee lakefront, with transition and finish areas at 500 N. Harbor Drive and 1010 N. Lincoln Memorial Drive. Parking options are accessible nearby for spectators and participants.

A detailed course map for the event will be provided to competitors, ensuring clarity and preparation for the demanding routes. These races are crafted to challenge the endurance and abilities of athletes while offering a top-tier experience.

“Winning a national championship is always special, but doing it in the city I call home was an experience I’ll never forget.”
