Alistair Overeem, a retired UFC heavyweight known for his brutal in-ring style, wasted no time in delivering his verdict. Speaking to Bloody Elbow, Overeem was harsh in his assessment. 'His body was finished five years ago,' he said. 'That return? To me, it was just a money grab the UFC helped facilitate.' Overeem’s words hit hard, especially given his own history of high-impact bouts and injuries.
The former title contender used McGregor's physical presentation as a sign of his athletic decline. 'You look at his face,' Overeem said. 'When you’re a fighter, you can look at another man and kind of see what’s up. Well, he’s just not the same guy.' According to Overeem, the fighter who once ruled the featherweight division is no longer the sharp, focused athlete he once was.
While McGregor has claimed that his previous issues were caused by drug and alcohol use, he now says he has adopted a more religious lifestyle. Overeem, however, isn’t buying it. 'I don’t see that lifestyle change,' he said. 'You need to have certain habits if you’re serious about being an athlete, and I just don’t see that with him.'
Despite his own advancing age—Overeem turned 46 in May—'Reem remains focused on making his own comeback in combat sports. He’s planning to compete three times against kickboxing legend Rico Verhoeven. But with major developments in the combat sports landscape, Verhoeven might be more interested in bigger opportunities than a rematch with Overeem.
Overeem isn’t holding back on his views, even if they put him at odds with the UFC and fans of McGregor. 'He can throw a punch, maybe even beat up some beginners,' he said. 'But on the biggest stage? I just don’t see it anymore.'
