Inside the upgraded infrastructure

HUN-REN has added two powerful servers to its cloud platform: the HPE Cray XD670 ROT H200 CTO and the Lenovo ThinkSystem SR680a V3. These are among the most advanced systems for artificial intelligence and high-performance computing available today. Designed to handle complex simulations and analyze massive datasets more quickly, the new servers boost the speed and efficiency of data processing for researchers.

Each system is capable of supporting up to eight H200 GPUs and is powered by 5th Generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors. These upgrades give researchers access to over 1 TB of HBM3e memory, a key feature for training AI models and performing high-fidelity simulations. The servers are also equipped with 400 Gb/s InfiniBand or Ethernet connectivity for fast data movement and feature NVMe storage optimized for performance, ensuring smooth handling of large-scale scientific and computational projects.

More power for more research

These new additions significantly expand the cloud's capacity, allowing multiple research projects to run simultaneously without performance slowdowns. From training AI models to performing complex modeling in physics and engineering, the upgraded infrastructure supports a wide range of high-compute tasks. The improved systems also boost Hungary’s capability to engage in international scientific collaborations that depend on high-performance computing resources.

Since its launch in 2016, the HUN-REN cloud has already supported over 400 research projects. More than 100 of those efforts led to scientific papers published in top-tier, Q1-ranked journals. The new servers are expected to further increase the platform's utility and extend its reach into new research areas.

The deployment lays a strong foundation for future research needs. With enterprise-level redundancy and advanced management tools, the systems are built to remain operational and reliable under heavy use. Their architecture is also optimized for emerging applications such as generative AI and large-scale data analytics, ensuring the platform remains relevant and capable for years to come.

This investment strengthens Hungary’s position in the global research landscape. As science increasingly depends on big data and AI, having a robust, high-capacity computing infrastructure is essential. The new servers help HUN-REN ensure its researchers have the tools they need to remain competitive and make meaningful contributions to global scientific advancements.
