The essentials

Explosive attack in Red Sea

A projectile struck the Indian-flagged vessel MSV Faize Noore Oliya in the Red Sea, causing it to capsize and sink. The incident occurred off the Yemeni coast, an area already facing rising instability and conflict. The ship was hit by what officials described as a projectile, though the identity of the attacker remains unknown.

India's Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal confirmed that all 14 people aboard the vessel were safely rescued. Thirteen of the crew were Indian nationals. In a statement, Sonowal condemned the attack as 'unprovoked' and assured the public that steps would be taken to protect seafarers from such threats in the future.

Growing instability in shipping lanes

The Red Sea has become a crucial alternative route for tankers since Iran blocked the Strait of Hormuz in February. This blockage caused major disruptions to global oil prices and shifted much of the shipping traffic away from the strait. Tankers from Saudi Arabia have been rerouting through the Red Sea, but the region is now under increased threat due to a recent wave of attacks.

Yemen's transportation ministry, which represents the internationally recognized government backed by Saudi Arabia, accused the Iran-backed Houthi rebels of carrying out the attack. They claimed the rebels used a small boat loaded with explosives for the strike. So far, the Houthi group has not made any public statement about their involvement in the incident.

The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) agency has reported several similar attacks on ships in the Red Sea in recent days. The Houthi rebels declared a blockade on Saudi Arabia's Red Sea ports on July 20, making navigation through the region even more dangerous for commercial vessels.

Diplomatic and economic turbulence

India's External Affairs Ministry released a statement calling the attacks on commercial shipping 'deeply worrisome.' It emphasized the need to stop targeting vessels and to restore free navigation and trade through international waters. The statement called for a swift resolution to the crisis in line with international law.

Meanwhile, U.S. officials expressed cautious optimism about a potential deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. In June, the U.S. and Iran signed a 14-point agreement aiming to halt military operations and resume trade through the strait. However, just a few weeks later, U.S. President Donald Trump declared the ceasefire 'over' after further Iranian attacks on ships in the area and U.S. retaliatory actions followed.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent recently stated that talks were progressing well, with a possible agreement to reopen the Strait as soon as Tuesday or Wednesday. Iran, however, has made it clear it is not negotiating with the U.S. and has been focusing on discussions with Oman instead.
