El futuro de Oklo ligado a la IA

La cartera de Oklo se basa en centros de datos de inteligencia artificial, pero sin ellos, su futuro es incierto.

The essentials
  • La cartera de pedidos de Oklo incluye 18 gigavatios, de los cuales el 93% está vinculado a centros de datos de IA.
  • La valoración de Oklo supera los 7.000 millones de dólares a pesar de no tener ingresos en 2025.

Oklo's long-term trajectory is heavily influenced by developments in the artificial intelligence industry, according to a report from Nasdaq. The company is currently working on a project pipeline totaling 18 gigawatts of energy generation, with 93% of that tied directly to energy consumption at AI data centers. This level of dependence demonstrates how much Oklo's plans for expansion and financial success rely on continued rapid growth in the AI sector.

Oklo's Reliance on AI Demand

At the moment, Oklo's energy generation plans are underpinned by three major agreements. These include a potential 12 gigawatts from Switch, a 1.2 gigawatt deal with Meta, and a 500 megawatt contract with Equinix. It's important to note that none of these agreements are binding. If the demand for artificial intelligence services declines, these contracts could be reduced or terminated. Each of Oklo's reactors is capable of producing 75 megawatts of power, but large data centers typically require hundreds or thousands of megawatts to operate efficiently. That means fulfilling the needs of a major AI client would require deploying many reactors to supply enough energy for a single company.

The level of energy required by AI data centers is one of the main reasons Oklo's fast-fission reactors are so appealing. A large hyperscaler, such as Switch or Equinix, could absorb enough energy to justify the deployment of dozens or even hundreds of Oklo reactors. This could generate hundreds of millions or even billions of dollars in annual revenue from a single partnership. Such partnerships are essential to Oklo's ability to expand its operations and support its current valuation.

Challenges in Non-AI Markets

Despite focusing on AI data centers, Oklo could also serve clients in non-AI industries like chemical manufacturing, military bases, and other industrial users. However, these clients typically require far less energy, meaning they would need only one or a few reactors to meet their needs. This would result in significantly lower revenue compared to what Oklo could earn from a hyperscale data center. Another possible source of income is Oklo's subsidiary, Atomic Alchemy, which has received a Nuclear Regulatory Commission license to produce isotopes. These isotopes are vital for cancer treatment and diagnostic imaging, and given the limited global supply, this business could offer some stability and diversification away from the AI sector.

Atomic Alchemy is one of Oklo’s primary strategies for diversification, but it accounts for only a small portion of the company’s overall revenue picture. The isotope business will need time to grow, and while it may provide early revenue before Oklo’s reactors begin producing energy, it won't be sufficient to justify the company's high valuation. Additionally, the isotope market is significantly smaller than the AI data center market, which limits Oklo's ability to achieve substantial growth and income without securing large AI contracts.

Oklo holds a market capitalization of over $7 billion, even though it generated no revenue in 2025. This valuation is almost entirely based on future expectations, particularly the assumption that AI demand will continue to rise and that Oklo will secure long-term contracts with major AI clients. Looking ahead, the company is projected to generate about $55 million in revenue two years from now, meaning it trades at around 127 times forward sales. This high valuation leaves little room for error, and any setbacks in AI could lead to a sharp drop in the stock price. Investors are warned to approach Oklo with caution, as the company is highly volatile and may not be suitable for those uncomfortable with market risk.

Oklo is more than a traditional energy company—it is a business whose future depends heavily on the performance of the AI industry. Although it has potential in non-AI markets and a new isotope business that could help diversify its revenue, the majority of its growth and financial success still hinges on securing contracts with AI-focused hyperscalers. Without these, the company's financial outlook could shift dramatically. For this reason, investors should carefully assess the risks before investing in Oklo, especially given how closely tied its stock is to the success of AI.
