The essentials

Technology and surveillance in Reform's migration strategy

Reform UK’s Zia Yusuf recently told Bloomberg that his party is engaging with top-tier technology companies to set up surveillance systems along the UK’s south coast. The aim is to prevent migrants from crossing the English Channel from France by sea. This plan follows a proposal by Reform to enforce the return of people who arrive in small boats, back to the French coast from where they originated.

Yusuf, who oversees Reform’s approach to home affairs, acknowledged that the party is in active conversation with multiple companies, including those with high-tech expertise in surveillance. However, he refused to disclose the names of the firms. Reform has been clear in its message: it believes advanced technology can play a central role in solving what it labels as the problem of 'irregular migration.'

Anduril and the role of surveillance tech

One firm already active in this area is California-based Anduril Industries, which has been awarded a contract by the UK Home Office to monitor the English Channel. Anduril claims its equipment can track vessels at a distance of more than 15km (9.3 miles) out at sea and flag them as suspicious. The company has also installed surveillance towers to monitor the channel under this government contract.

Despite these capabilities, concerns have been raised by human rights groups about the lack of transparency surrounding how Anduril stores the data collected through its surveillance systems. While Anduril is one of the major players in the field, it is not the only one. Several European startups, such as Delian Alliance Industries, are offering similar surveillance tools to governments. Another Portuguese firm, Tekever, has also previously worked with the UK Home Office on channel surveillance projects. Both Delian and Tekever have yet to respond to comment requests.

Palantir and political connections

Palantir Technologies Inc, a company with a history of providing data solutions to US immigration enforcement, has recently turned its attention to Reform UK. Although it does not currently hold any UK border control contracts, Palantir has sought closer ties with the party. Nigel Farage, the leader of Reform, was the only UK politician to appear at a Palantir reception in Davos earlier in the year. Furthermore, Palantir hired Charles Carlson to its press team, who had previously worked for Reform in a comparable role.

While the UK defense ministry has worked with Palantir in the past, its involvement in current border control contracts is not clear. The company has not publicly responded to requests for comment on these matters. However, the fact that Palantir is reaching out to Reform and has high-profile political connections has drawn public and media attention.

Farage has announced a stronger, more forceful approach to border enforcement. Should Reform succeed in the next general election, which is scheduled for no later than mid-2029, he has said that military-grade vessels would be deployed to intercept migrants in the English Channel and return them to France. This marks a significant escalation in Reform’s policy proposals around immigration control.

Farage's more extreme policy direction comes at a time when he has largely avoided public appearances and media engagement. This has followed a period of intense scrutiny over Reform’s finances and internal operations. Meanwhile, members of the opposition have criticized the new policy. Chris Philp, the Conservative Party’s home affairs spokesman, dismissed Farage's plan as a 'gimmick.' Labour’s Energy Secretary, Miatta Fahnbulleh, expressed skepticism, suggesting the policy would lead to protracted negotiations with the French government rather than a practical solution.

“Suffice to say we’re talking to the most cutting-edge companies in this space.”
The other side

Chris Philp of the Conservatives called the plan a gimmick, and Labour’s Miatta Fahnbulleh said it would lead to more diplomatic clashes with France.
