The essentials

Advisory shift

The US State Department adjusted its guidance for American visitors to Belgium on 23 July, bumping the advisory from Level 1 to Level 2. This indicates a noticeable rise in safety concerns. The decision followed reports of petty crime, terrorist threats, and ongoing protests across the country.

The advisory warns of frequent small-time thefts, especially in areas popular with tourists. Officials note that these crimes are often opportunistic, like pickpocketing or snatching bags from careless travelers. The advice to avoid crowded areas and stay vigilant in tourist zones is now part of the updated guidance.

Terrorism and protests

Terrorism remains a concern, with a noted risk of violent attacks. The advisory recommends reviewing official reports from the State Department for more information on this threat. Meanwhile, civil unrest is attributed to large public demonstrations, often peaceful, sparked by political tensions. These gatherings can cause transport disruptions and other service issues.

According to The Brussels Times, recent demonstrations, including clashes over education funding in the French-speaking regions and nationwide protests against austerity policies, influenced the decision. These events, which drew tens of thousands, point to growing public dissatisfaction in the country.

Government response and clarification

Florinda Baleci, a spokesperson for Belgium’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, clarified that the US’s travel advisory is an independent decision made by each country. She emphasized that the right to issue such warnings is a sovereign power. Despite the advisory, there is no indication that the situation in Belgium has deteriorated significantly.

“Issuing travel advisories to its own citizens is the sole responsibility of each country.”
