New firmware for AirPods brings iOS 27 features
Apple has unveiled a fourth version of beta firmware aimed at the AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Pro 3, AirPods 4, and AirPods Max 2 models. The firmware, marked with the build number 9A5336b, offers a glimpse into upcoming features set to be included in iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS Golden Gate. This early version introduces several enhancements intended to improve user interaction, including a redesigned interface for the AirPods.
The new firmware features a redesigned AirPods interface with a custom layout for more intuitive navigation. Users can expect a slider for the Adaptive mode, a function that allows real-time adjustments to the audio environment depending on user activity. Additionally, the update supports custom EQ settings, which let users create their own personalized audio profiles. All of these changes align with Apple's strategy to refine and expand audio features for future software updates.
Only available to developers for now
At the moment, this beta firmware is available exclusively to registered developers. To use it, users must have an Apple device running iOS 26, iPadOS 26, or macOS 26. The installation begins in the AirPods settings interface, where the option to enable beta updates is located. Once enabled, the firmware can be downloaded and applied to the AirPods.
Unlike other Apple devices, the process for installing this firmware is more hands-on. Users are required to physically connect their AirPods to a power source and wait while the firmware downloads and installs. This process can take several hours to finish, making it quite different from the automatic updates seen on iPhones, iPads, and Macs.
No software update option for AirPods firmware
Apple does not include a direct software update menu for AirPods firmware, as is the case with other Apple devices. Instead, users must rely on the process of connecting their AirPods to an Apple product to check for and install the new firmware. Updates are delivered automatically once the setup is initiated, without the need for manual intervention beyond the initial setup.
This lack of a centralized update system can be a hurdle for users who are used to the streamlined experience of updating other Apple products. However, the current method ensures that only developers or those specifically interested in testing the latest firmware can access the update, keeping it separate from the general user base.
In addition to the firmware updates, Apple has also been working on a new API for improved compatibility. This will allow third-party accessories, such as the Ray-Ban Meta glasses and Quest headsets, to automatically pair across Apple devices. This effort is part of a response to a request made under the EU's Digital Markets Act, which calls for greater interoperability among devices.
