The essentials

Eligibility and what to expect

Google has launched its latest Pixel update, starting on August 4. The software is reaching compatible Pixel models today. The August 2026 update is available for Pixel 8, 8 Pro, 8a, and all Pixel 9 and 10 models, including the newly launched Pixel 10a. However, Pixel 6 and 7 owners are excluded from the update, despite Google typically offering five years of software support for those phones.

The update targets Pixel 10-series devices to address problems with game-related crashes and touchscreen issues. It also resolves a major flaw affecting the phone’s video processing component. Google has not released detailed information about the vulnerability. Nonetheless, the fix is considered important for device security.

Two versions, some exclusions

In most areas, Pixel users are receiving update version CP2A.260805.005. However, users in Canada with Pixel 8 phones from Rogers are getting a different variant: CP2A.260805.005.A1. Google’s documentation does not clarify why these models are excluded or why a special version exists for them. The Rogers exclusion also affects the Pixel 8 Pro and 8a models.

This month’s update is not making it to Pixel 6 and 7 users. Google has stated both series should receive software updates for five years. Yet, the latest security fix is not available for those devices. No explanation was provided in the release notes, raising questions about why those models were left out.

When to expect the update

For Pixel 8, 9, and 10-series owners, the update should arrive soon. If your device runs Android 17 and is listed as eligible, the update could appear within the next few days. Google confirmed the rollout began on August 4. While some users may see the update immediately, others might need to wait a few days for it to be delivered.

The update is part of Google’s regular monthly maintenance cycle, addressing both usability and security concerns. Users are encouraged to check for it through their phone settings once it becomes available.

Between the lines

The exclusion of Pixel 6 and 7 models may hint at support shifts ahead, but Google hasn’t confirmed any changes.
