DJI’s latest audio device, the Mic Mini 2S, introduces a groundbreaking feature to its lineup: the ability to record audio internally. This marks the first time any device in the company's Mic Mini series can save high-quality audio directly onto the device. The company says this is an essential asset for creators who need an extra layer of audio security and may not always rely on their camera or smartphone for reliable sound. With the Mic Mini 2S, users gain 14.5GB of onboard storage designed to handle 32-bit float audio files, which offer dynamic range that won’t clip or lose fidelity if audio levels are set too high.
This built-in recording feature is particularly valuable for solo shooters and content creators who often lack a dedicated sound operator. If the levels are accidentally overdriven, causing the main audio to clip or distort, the internal backup recording still captures usable, high-quality sound. This kind of redundancy wasn’t available on earlier models, making the 2S a notable upgrade for those who rely on audio performance in unpredictable settings.
Same design, new tricks
The Mic Mini 2S retains the sleek, minimalist design of its predecessor, the Mic Mini 2. The transmitters feature magnetic clips for quick attachment to clothing or gear, swappable colorful front covers for personalization, and a lightweight build that makes it one of the smallest wireless microphones available. Each transmitter weighs in at 12 grams, which is just a bit heavier than the 11-gram original. This slight increase in weight is offset by the storage capacity and additional features.
The transmitters also come with clip-on wind muffs to help reduce background noise in outdoor environments. They include a 3.5mm camera cable and a smartphone adapter for added versatility. The 2S is compatible with select DJI cameras through the OsmoAudio Direct Connection system, including the Osmo Pocket 4P and Osmo Action 6. Meanwhile, the receiver can be connected to any camera that supports a 3.5mm mic input or to smartphones using the included adapter.
AI features and expansion for content creators
DJI has continued to refine its AI noise-canceling technology with two preset modes in the 2S. 'Basic' mode is ideal for indoor settings like offices or studios, where it can reduce low-level background noise such as hum from fans or air conditioning. 'Strong' mode, on the other hand, is built for tackling aggressive outdoor noise like wind or traffic. However, the company warns that 'Strong' can alter the natural quality of speech and recommends using it only when absolutely necessary.
In addition to the noise-canceling modes, the device offers a 'Clipping Control' setting that automatically tames audio levels in unpredictable or loud environments. There's also a 'Loudness Balance' function that normalizes voice levels to keep speech consistent, which is especially useful during interviews or live-streaming scenarios. The mic comes with three tone presets to shape the final audio tone: 'Regular' for a balanced and natural sound, 'Bright' for added clarity in noisy or acoustically challenging settings, and 'Rich' for a warmer, fuller tone.
For creators who work in groups or need to handle multiple sound sources at once, the 2S receiver is capable of connecting with up to four transmitters simultaneously. This is especially useful for vloggers or journalists recording group interviews. What’s more, the receiver is backward compatible with earlier DJI mic models, including the Mic 2, Mic 3, and Mic Mini 2. This compatibility allows content creators to expand their systems without replacing all their existing equipment, making it a more budget-friendly way to upgrade.
The Mic Mini 2S also comes with a 1,950mAh charging case that can power the transmitters and the receiver for approximately 42 hours of combined use. A full charge takes about two hours, making it a convenient option for long shoots or when switching between locations. The charging case also adds to the device’s portability and ease of use, especially for creators who are always on the move.
