The essentials

High supplier awareness but slow adoption

A shared report by JEITA, the Connected Home Alliance, and Dentsu found that 90% of housing suppliers in Japan are aware of smart home technology. Yet the same study shows a widening chasm between this knowledge and actual implementation, with many suppliers uncertain about moving forward with installations.

Released on August 7, the report was developed by a promotion group operating under JEITA’s smart home subcommittee. It included surveys of both consumers and housing suppliers like developers, landlords, and building operators. The purpose was to uncover obstacles to broader adoption and recommend better public understanding methods.

User experience and trust remain key hurdles

The research shows that past users of smart home devices are much more likely to try them again. However, even free services couldn’t fully address worries about energy use, system failures, and user complexity. These issues remain a challenge for many people.

The results highlight a mismatch between interest and action. While housing suppliers see the value in safety, comfort, and convenience smart homes offer, many are still not taking action to bring them into practice.

JEITA forming group to drive real progress

To tackle these issues, JEITA created the Smart Home Installer Study Group in May 2026. By June 2026, forty organizations from JEITA and the Connected Home Alliance had joined the group. JEITA, the alliance, and Dentsu all support the initiative, which seeks solutions using both data and practical insights.

The full report can be found on JEITA’s smart home subcommittee site. It provides a clear view of current success, what’s lacking, and how the industry can work to fix the divide.

“The publication was intended to quantify and organize a gap that has emerged in the market.”
