Asia’s mixed messages

Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia, all influential in Asia, have chosen to continue supporting Infantino, which bolsters his position in the region. Additionally, Jordan’s Prince Ali bin Hussein has raised allegations of potential blackmail, which adds another layer of uncertainty to the AFC’s internal dynamics and future decisions.
Concacaf and Conmebol take different stances
Concacaf has publicly rejected the FFE proposal and issued a rare but direct critique of Infantino’s leadership. Marina Mendez, a director at AD Sporting Industry Professionals and a close associate of Conmebol, described the confederation’s approach as one of cautious support. This strategy is aimed at preserving its institutional relationship with Fifa while avoiding direct confrontation with Infantino. Mendez noted that this position is politically significant, as it shows a preference for negotiation over public opposition.
Unlike Uefa, Concacaf, and the AFC, which openly criticized the FFE proposal, Conmebol has not made a public statement. The confederation’s muted response suggests it is more interested in maintaining room for negotiation rather than joining a public campaign against Infantino.
