Both the Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 10 Pro already support UWB. That means the hardware is in place. If the Pixel Tag uses this, it could make finding lost items nearly effortless. All Google has to do is build around that existing tech and perfect the user experience.

But it's not just about the tech inside the Pixel Tag itself. When an item goes missing, the real magic lies in the network. AirTags, for example, don’t use GPS or have their own cellular connection. Instead, they rely on Apple’s vast network of devices. When someone else's iPhone passes by, it silently and securely reports the AirTag’s location. You don’t see it happening. The person carrying the phone doesn’t know they helped. Apple doesn’t know which AirTag it is, thanks to encryption. It’s all anonymous and safe.
This passive, invisible support is why AirTags are so powerful. One person walks by, then another, and before long, you get an updated location in the app. Google has a similar feature called Find Hub, which is a good start. But it needs more users and a stronger network. If the Pixel Tag only works on certain phones, it won’t be as effective as Apple's offering. Users need to feel just as confident that their Pixel Tag is being found, no matter where it ends up.
What the Future Holds
With the upcoming Pixel 11 series, we may see more phones supporting UWB technology. That could help the Pixel Tag become accessible across more devices. But it’s not just about hardware. It’s about the full experience. The tag should work silently, without needing user input. When you carry the right phone, and your tag is lost, the location should appear in your app automatically, no extra steps needed.
If Google nails it, the Pixel Tag could become a game changer. It needs to be precise, like AirTag’s Precision Finding. It needs to be reliable, like the Apple Find My network. And it needs to feel invisible in the best way possible. You should forget that the Pixel Tag exists on your keychain, but never forget the keys themselves. That’s the ultimate goal.
