The essentials

Iran's Fars news agency reported Sunday that tankers remain halted in the Strait of Hormuz, awaiting permission to proceed. According to Fars, the closure remains absolute, and Iranian authorities have made clear that passage is contingent on the Armed Forces of the Islamic Republic.

The agency cited an unnamed source within the Iranian negotiating team, rejecting reports that Tehran had accepted a Qatari proposal to resume traffic through the strait. 'There is no agreement and the reports on this are false,' the source said. The strait, a key global shipping artery, is being held closed as a response to 'hostile actions' by the United States.

This comes amid comments by U.S. President Donald Trump, who said in a social media post that he would not proceed with new strikes against Iran. He claimed a 'deal' with Middle East allies would include 'the Immediate, Complete, and Total OPENING OF THE HORMUZ STRAIT.' Trump noted he had agreed to cancel attacks 'for the future benefit of the WORLD and the survival of a successful and prosperous Iran.'

Trump has previously halted U.S. military actions in the region, though tensions have repeatedly flared after initial pauses. Iran’s defense minister, responding to Trump's statement via X, said the country remains 'alert' and 'neither surprised nor passive' to ongoing threats.

What could happen next

Watch for any movement from Qatari mediators or a new U.S.-led proposal on Hormuz, which would determine whether the closure continues.
