Kavanaugh noted that the discussion has shifted from when Hughes will sign an extension with Minnesota to whether he will even do so at all. Wild GM Bill Guerin has been in contact with Hughes' representatives, but he stressed that these decisions take time and require thoughtful consideration. “These are big decisions, and we're in communication, but it's a process,” Guerin stated, emphasizing the complexity involved in such high-stakes negotiations.
NHL Insider Jeff Marek offered another perspective, suggesting that money may not be the primary concern for Hughes. According to Marek, Hughes is likely more focused on whether the Wild have the right combination of talent and direction to compete for a Stanley Cup. “It's not just about the dollars,” Marek explained. “I think he's looking at the bigger picture and asking, ‘Is this the right place to win?’” This insight highlights how Hughes is evaluating his future based on the team's potential for success, rather than just the financial aspects of the deal.
The trade that brought Hughes to Minnesota surprised many, as it was expected he would join a team in the Eastern Conference, particularly one with playoff ambitions. Instead, the Wild made a bold decision to acquire the star defenseman. One reason Hughes may feel strongly about staying is the massive price Minnesota paid to acquire him. In December 2025, Guerin sent a significant package to Vancouver that included Marco Rossi, Zeev Buium, Liam Öhgren, and a 2026 first-round pick (Adam Novotný). The Wild gave up several important young assets to bring Hughes to Minnesota. Because of that investment, Hughes reportedly understands that leaving as a free agent in 2027 would leave the organization without any return for what it surrendered.
For now, both sides appear interested in reaching an extension. The main disagreement reportedly centers on the contract's length and financial structure. The incoming NHL Collective Bargaining Agreement will also reduce the maximum contract length from eight years to seven, starting Sept. 16. That gives Guerin an added reason to try to get a long-term deal done before the deadline. A shorter three-year contract could also appeal to Hughes. While the possibility of Hughes eventually joining his brothers in New Jersey will continue to generate headlines, Russo's latest update should provide some relief for Wild fans.
