The essentials
  • Ellis brings 12 years of NBA experience to Alcorn.
  • The Braves finished 9-23 last season under head coach Jake Morton.
  • Ellis will oversee roster building, recruiting, and NIL opportunities.

Alcorn State University has officially appointed Monta Ellis as the general manager for the men's basketball program. A Jackson, Mississippi, native, Ellis is returning to his home state after a decorated 12-year career in the NBA.

Ellis' NBA legacy and Alcorn return

Ellis was selected in the second round of the 2005 NBA Draft by the Golden State Warriors. The start of a professional journey saw him play for the Warriors, Milwaukee Bucks, Dallas Mavericks, and Indiana Pacers. Over 12 seasons, he scored 14,858 points. He also dished out 3,856 assists and pulled down 2,874 rebounds. Known for his scoring ability, Ellis has become a local icon. His hiring is seen as a way to bring pride back to the Alcorn community. As general manager, he will help construct the roster. He will also evaluate talent, shape recruiting plans, and navigate the transfer portal. He will manage NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) opportunities. Ellis will work to strengthen relationships with alumni and donors.

What Ellis brings to the table

Ellis expressed his deep connection to Alcorn. He stated, "Alcorn isn't just a university. It's a place built on history, tradition, excellence, and a legacy that has impacted generations." His leadership will focus on building a program that honors its heritage. It will also implement fresh strategies. He will mentor student-athletes. Ellis will support their development. He will serve as a role model both on and off the court. Last season, under first-year head coach Jake Morton, the Braves advanced to the second round of the SWAC Tournament. They defeated No. 10 seed Alabama State, 77-65. With Ellis now in place, the Braves aim to build on that momentum. They want to return to contention.

“Today marks the beginning of an incredible new chapter, and I'm truly honored and excited to be named the general manager for men's basketball at Alcorn State University.”
The asterisk

The Braves still face a rebuilding year. Ellis starts in a program coming off a 9-23 record.
