A home-state decision
Justin Wise, a standout 6-foot-4, 175-pound shooting guard from North Oconee, has announced his college basketball commitment to the University of Georgia. The announcement, shared publicly on Friday, Aug. 7, marks his choice to pursue his collegiate ambitions right here in Georgia, staying close to family and home.
Wise, a rising senior ranked third nationally at his position and 54th overall by the 247Sports Composite, made his choice based on both personal and practical reasons. A key factor in his decision was his close relationship with Khamari Brooks, a fellow North Oconee graduate and Georgia football freshman. Brooks, who also starred at North Oconee, shared the same high school and community background, making the decision to stay closer feel natural for Wise.
A legacy in the making
Wise's high school basketball journey has been impressive, beginning with back-to-back state 4A championships. During those two seasons, he led North Oconee to an outstanding 30-3 and 30-2 record, showcasing his leadership and scoring ability. In his most recent season, he was a consistent force on the court, averaging 21 points, 5 assists, 6 rebounds, and 2 steals per game, while playing a pivotal role in leading the Titans to a 26-4 record.
His achievements have positioned him to likely finish as North Oconee's all-time leader in 3-point shooting and current all-time leading scorer, having already surpassed 2,000 career points. North Oconee head coach Rick Rasmussen, who has seen the full arc of Wise's development, said the player's impact on the program is historic. 'Obviously, you could argue he’s the best basketball player in North Oconee history,' Rasmussen said, highlighting Wise's role as a key pillar in the program's success.
Family and future
The influence of family played a role in Wise's commitment. His older brother, Brayden Wise, is a sophomore point guard at North Oconee with notable attention from major programs like Georgia, Georgia Tech, Miami, and Mississippi State. Meanwhile, the bond between the Wise family and the Georgia basketball program grows with Collin White, son of Georgia head coach Mike White, who also plays guard at North Oconee and shares a close friendship with Brayden.
Wise made his commitment with the intention of remaining focused on his senior season, avoiding the distraction of ongoing recruitment. Rasmussen noted that Wise chose to delay a larger public celebration until later in the season and will host a private commitment party this Sunday. The coach added that Wise is driven by the game itself. He loves the game and he loves to play and he cares about the right things,' Rasmussen said, underscoring the player's focus and maturity.
