Armed attackers stormed villages in Zamfara State, killing at least 20 people in what residents describe as one of the deadliest incidents of the year. The assault occurred between 3pm and 4pm local time on Wednesday, according to Nasiru Lauwali, a local representative who spoke with AFP. These groups frequently target villages for livestock theft and kidnappings, demanding ransoms from both individuals and the government.

Security forces have responded with increasing intensity. Late on Tuesday, in Kwara State, at least three bandits were killed in a military operation. A businessman, Tuhkur Sanni, was also rescued during the same engagement, according to Nigeria’s The Punch news website.

Kidnappings have become a persistent feature of rural life in Nigeria. In 2024 alone, ransom payments to armed groups have surpassed $1.6 million, according to SBM Intelligence. Earlier this month, 56 students and teachers were released after being held for over two months in the Oyo State school abductions. Eight suspects were arrested, and an unspecified number were killed.

Defence Minister Christopher Musa said the suspected kidnappers had planned to use the hostages to pressure the government into freeing imprisoned group members. A separate security crisis in the northeast, driven in part by the Boko Haram insurgency, has also weakened overall state capacity to respond.

President Bola Tinubu has publicly condemned the attacks. Yet the pattern remains: violence surges, responses follow, and the cycle resumes. The question now is whether these recent operations signal a shift or merely another pause in a long-running conflict.

“Today, between 3pm [14:00 GMT] and 4pm [15:00 GMT], a large number of bandits have invaded our communities, targeting all the people they meet”
