Ukraine’s new military chief, Mykhailo Drapatyi, has announced plans to intensify attacks on Russian forces, including operations behind enemy lines. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy named him to lead the armed forces this week, and Drapatyi confirmed the military will focus on increasing offensive efforts across all fronts. This comes as Ukraine and Russia both step up strikes against critical infrastructure, heightening the war’s impact.
Drapatyi was appointed as the head of Ukraine’s armed forces after Kyiv reported some success on the battlefield, including reclaiming 700 square kilometers of land in 2024. In a message shared on Facebook, he outlined his priorities, saying, 'Difficult work lies ahead, so we will proceed without loud promises, with responsibility for our decisions and respect for the people who are holding the front line and helping Ukraine endure.' The statement underlines his commitment to steady, results-focused action.
Ukrainian forces have begun implementing Drapatyi’s strategy, targeting Russian logistics and supply networks. On Wednesday, strikes on warehouses in southern Russia hit facilities linked to Wildberries, a top Russian online retail company. The company’s chief executive, Tatyana Kim, said several people were injured in the attack. Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Zelenskyy described the strikes as targeting logistics hubs used to supply Russian military operations, though he did not name the company involved.
Escalation on Both Sides
Zelenskyy also reported attacks on an oil depot, a tanker, and four cargo ships from Russia’s ‘shadow fleet’ in the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov. These ships, which avoid sanctions, have become key to Russia’s war efforts. On the other side of the conflict, Russia’s defense ministry announced its forces captured the settlements of Artilne in the Kharkiv region and Blahodatne in Zaporizhzhia. They also claimed strikes on cargo facilities in Odesa and three warehouses storing drones.
Russian officials downplayed the significance of Drapatyi’s appointment. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the new commander would not affect the front-line situation. He added that the Russian military is continuing its operations as usual. Both sides show no sign of slowing down as they push through the conflict.
Amid the rising military activity, diplomatic attempts to end the war remain stuck. US Senator Marco Rubio, who serves as America’s representative in foreign policy matters, is set to meet with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Manila this week. Lavrov confirmed the meeting, and Rubio expressed openness to exploring peace talks if the chance arises. He said, 'We remain open to playing a role in ending the conflict if the opportunity presents itself.'
Zelenskyy is also pushing for more support from the US, particularly in securing Patriot air defense interceptors. In a recent meeting with US Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker, he described obtaining these systems as a 'critical priority.' The demand reflects Ukraine’s ongoing struggles to intercept Russian ballistic missiles, especially as Moscow increases the number of such attacks.
The broader context of stalled diplomacy includes the US shifting its focus to its tensions with Iran. As a result, peace talks involving Ukraine have been on hold for months. Despite the lack of progress, the upcoming meeting between Lavrov and Rubio could offer a new opening for dialogue, even if outcomes are uncertain.
