Bangladeshi Tea Rights Activist Detained After Protest Clashes

Gita Rani Kanu, a prominent human rights defender based in the Sylhet tea-growing region of Bangladesh, has been placed in detention following her arrest in Moulvibazar. According to reports from GN geopolitics/rights, she was taken into custody by plainclothes officers on September 2, 2026, after being named the primary suspect in a criminal complaint filed by the Bangladesh Tea Workers’ Union. The court subsequently authorized her detention in Moulvibazar District Jail, where she remains held.

The arrest marks a significant escalation in the ongoing dispute over labor rights in the region. Kanu, who serves as the convener of the Bangladesh Tea Worker Women's Forum and General Secretary of the Tea Workers’ Grand Struggle Committee, has long advocated for improved wages and union democracy. Her detention follows a series of protests demanding a daily wage increase, a demand that has remained central to the workers' agenda for several years.

Charges follow disputed protest incident

The criminal complaint alleges that on August 31, 2026, Kanu and other individuals entered the union’s office in the Labour House area, resulting in injury to the union’s General Secretary and the theft of cash. The charges include unlawful assembly, causing hurt, theft, and criminal intimidation under various sections of the Penal Code. Four other named individuals and up to seven unidentified persons are also implicated in the case.

Protesters cite prior violence and injuries

However, the narrative surrounding the incident is contested. Protests held on August 31 involved a human chain and a rally that passed the union office, where demonstrators claim their banner was torn and they were attacked by union members. According to the protesters, between ten and twelve individuals were injured in the confrontation. Kanu and two fellow activists were reportedly receiving medical treatment for injuries sustained during this clash at the time the police action was taken.

Political context of labor activism

Kanu’s role in the tea workers' movement extends beyond immediate wage demands. In 2024, she became the first candidate from the tea workers' community to contest a local government election, running for chairperson of the Kamalganj Upazila Parishad. Her recent detention has drawn attention from human rights organizations, who view it as a potential restriction on the right to peaceful assembly and union activity. The case highlights the complex intersection of labor rights, local politics, and legal enforcement in the Sylhet division.
