Myanmar Junta Launches Combined Air and Sea Assault on Coastal Villages

Residents in Thandwe face escalating danger as military jets and warships target civilian areas in Arakan State.
Civilians in Thandwe Township, located in Arakan State, are reporting widespread panic following a sustained campaign of airstrikes and naval bombardments by the Myanmar military junta. Local accounts indicate that warships positioned along the coastline have engaged fishing vessels and residential zones, creating a pervasive atmosphere of fear among the population.
According to reports from the GN geopolitics/coup desk, the intensity of the conflict has forced residents from at least five coastal communities to abandon their homes. The combined pressure from air and sea assets has disrupted daily life, leaving displaced families in urgent need of humanitarian support while those who remain struggle with severe food shortages.
Coastal communities face direct military fire
On September 7, junta warships deployed near the Thandwe coastline fired heavy artillery into surrounding villages. Residents described a dual threat where naval vessels harassed fishing boats while jet fighters targeted residential neighborhoods. One local resident noted that the regime bombed the area again recently, leaving people terrified of further attacks.
Airstrikes on the morning of the same day targeted Thandwe Town, Kyaukkyi Village, and the Ngapali Beach area. These attacks resulted in the immediate death of an elderly woman and injuries to three other civilians. The pattern of strikes suggests a deliberate effort to suppress civilian presence in these strategic coastal locations.
Humanitarian crisis deepens amid displacement
The sustained military pressure has triggered a significant exodus from coastal areas, including Kyaukkyi, which has been struck in previous engagements. While not every village has been completely evacuated, households from four or five communities are fleeing to safer locations. The United League of Arakan is currently delivering initial food aid to those affected, though the scale of the need remains high.
For those who have not yet displaced, livelihoods are severely compromised. The ongoing military threats prevent locals from engaging in essential activities such as fishing or working, leading to acute food shortages. The inability to secure basic sustenance has exacerbated the humanitarian emergency in the region.
Strategic maneuvers aim to reclaim territory
Military analysts suggest that the junta is coordinating army, navy, and air assets to launch new counter-offensives in southern Arakan State. According to Captain Zin Yaw, a military defector, the regime is attempting to incrementally reclaim towns near Gwa by stretching Arakan Army forces across multiple fronts.
The strategy involves mounting a feint from Sittwe while simultaneously pushing toward Rathedaung, effectively testing defenses on both fronts to gain a foothold wherever possible. Heavy fighting continues between the military and the Arakan Army in Sittwe and Kyaukphyu townships, with the regime relying heavily on naval and air power to penetrate AA-controlled areas in the south.
