51 Migrants Reach Dover After 33-Hour Channel Crossing

Fifty-one migrants arrived in Dover on Tuesday morning. They spent more than 33 hours at sea on a small inflatable dinghy. The boat left the Normandy coast on Monday morning. It was a rare departure point for such crossings.

The arrival at 00:30 BST followed initial expectations of a landing at Gosport. Hundreds of protesters gathered there on Tuesday evening. They surrounded the marina area, chanting slogans. Police eventually blocked off nearby roads to manage the crowd.

According to Hampshire police, six people were arrested in Gosport. They were accused of becoming hostile toward officers. Charges included aggravated trespass and assault of emergency workers. The individuals remain in custody while inquiries continue.

In Dover, about 20 people protested near the port. No arrests were made at that location. Migrants were seen disembarking in orange life jackets. They carried personal belongings as they exited the vessel.

Police investigate violent footage

An activist live-streamed the boat from the Channel. Over 15,000 people watched the video online. Police are now investigating part of this footage. It appears to show the activist slashing the vessel with a knife.

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution assisted the group. They acted out of concern for safety. The migrants had already been picked up before the incident. Therefore, no one was on board during the slash.

Border security context and figures

The French coastguard described conditions as precarious. Migrants refused help, determined to reach the UK. A government spokesperson said authorities work around the clock. They process every small boat arrival that reaches shore.

This year, 17,480 migrants have arrived by boat. That total is 46% lower than last year. The National Crime Agency cites law enforcement for the drop. Experts also note improving security in Syria as a factor.
