Germany pushes NATO to accelerate defense production
Berlin argues that rapid industrial scaling is essential to counter emerging hybrid threats and maintain alliance cohesion.
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul stated on Thursday that NATO members must significantly increase defense manufacturing to ensure a credible deterrent against Russian aggression. The remarks were made in Berlin alongside NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, framing the need for accelerated production as a response to recent security incidents.
According to the ministry, the urgency stems from an attempted drone attack at Leipzig Airport last month. German investigators have linked the incident to Russian intelligence services, a finding that officials described as indicative of a broader pattern of hybrid warfare targeting European infrastructure and public stability.
Hybrid threats reshape security priorities
Wadephul characterized the Leipzig event as one element of a sustained campaign involving airspace violations, cyberattacks, and sabotage. He noted that these operations often aim to influence public opinion and spread fear, particularly in the lead-up to regional elections. Industrial capacity drives deterrence
The minister emphasized that political unity must be matched by tangible military capabilities. Berlin has committed to increasing its own defense spending while urging other European partners to share the burden of strengthening the alliance’s collective defense posture.
Sustained support for Ukraine
Despite the focus on European defense, Wadephul reaffirmed Germany’s commitment to supporting Ukraine, particularly in the area of air defense. Berlin plans to deliver additional interceptor missiles before winter to protect Ukrainian cities and critical energy infrastructure from intensified aerial bombardment, underscoring the dual-track approach to regional security.
