Romanian authorities have detained former presidential candidate Calin Georgescu in a fraud probe involving alleged organized crime and a 1.1 million euro loss for a businessman. This detention marks the third criminal case against him, sparking protests from supporters and accusations of political persecution from his allies.
Balkan Insight reports that prosecutors allege Georgescu led a group that defrauded a businessman of over 1 million euros by promising a loan that never materialized. The outlet adds that his political ally, George Simion, has labeled the detention an abuse of power and a sign of dictatorship, while hundreds of supporters gathered outside the investigative agency's headquarters.
