Ukrainian military intelligence reports that the cumulative toll of Russian personnel losses has surpassed the 1.5 million mark, driven by a sharp rise in daily casualties and substantial attrition of heavy weaponry.
The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported on September 9 that Russia has lost approximately 1,502,390 troops since the start of its full-scale invasion in February 2022. This latest assessment includes an additional 1,520 casualties attributed to Russian forces over the previous 24 hours. A January 2026 report by the Center for Strategic and International Studies estimates that Ukraine has likely suffered between 500,000 and 600,000 casualties from February 2022 to December 2025. Within that range, between 100,000 and 140,000 are believed to be killed in action.
Ukrainian leadership has offered separate figures for confirmed fatalities. President Volodymyr Zelensky stated in a February 4 interview with France TV that at least 55,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed since the war began, noting that many others remain missing in action.
