Climate Disruptions Exacerbate Gender Gaps in Global Education

UNICEF data reveals that extreme weather events disproportionately push girls out of school, creating long-term economic and social consequences.
Girls face a significantly higher risk of leaving the education system when schools are closed or damaged by climate-related events, according to a new assessment by the United Nations Children’s Fund. The agency reported that extreme weather disrupted the schooling of more than 171 million students across 106 countries and territories in the last year, with storms and heatwaves identified as primary drivers of these interruptions.
The report highlights that the impact is not evenly distributed. When infrastructure fails or classes are cancelled, girls often bear the brunt of the consequences, facing increased domestic responsibilities that make it difficult to return to the classroom. This gendered disparity in educational access is linked to broader societal pressures, including a heightened risk of early marriage during periods of displacement and family income loss.
Gendered Consequences of Infrastructure Failure
According to the analysis, the disruption of schooling triggers a cascade of effects that specifically burden young women. Damage to sanitation facilities and the need to collect water often fall on girls, diverting their time away from study. UNICEF noted that these added caregiving duties and the loss of family income create an environment where child marriage becomes more likely, effectively cutting off the path back to formal education for many.
The agency emphasized that these pressures are compounded in low- and lower-middle-income countries, where educational systems frequently lack the resources to maintain learning during emergencies. As a result, the temporary nature of a storm or heatwave can translate into permanent educational loss, widening the gap between genders in literacy and numeracy skills.
Economic Implications of Learning Loss
The long-term financial cost of these disruptions is substantial. UNICEF estimates that the resulting loss of learning could lead to lifetime income losses of at least 200 billion US dollars, further entrenching global inequalities. The report underscores that while the 2025 figures show a decrease compared to previous years, the underlying vulnerability of half the world’s children remains stark, with many living in regions at very high risk for environmental shocks.
Methodological changes in the data collection process, shifting from government figures to reports from aid agencies and local media, may account for some of the variation in the statistics. However, the core finding remains consistent: climate hazards are a major barrier to educational continuity, with the most severe impacts felt by those with the fewest resources to adapt.
Pathways for Resilient School Infrastructure
In response to these findings, the UN agency has called on governments and international partners to increase investment in educational facilities that can withstand climate and environmental hazards. The recommendation focuses on building infrastructure that is not only robust against physical damage but also equipped to support continued learning during periods of crisis.
