Ambassador's Son Critically Wounded in Maccabim Checkpoint Attack

IDF reservist Neria Leiter was seriously wounded in a car-ramming attack. The incident occurred on Wednesday at the Maccabim checkpoint. He is an American citizen and the son of Ambassador Yechiel Leiter.

Leiter is currently receiving treatment at Shaare Zedek Medical Center. Doctors performed multi-hour brain surgery on him. According to the hospital, his condition remains very serious.

Ambassador returns from United States

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited the family at the hospital. He did so before departing for the United Nations General Assembly. At the same time, Ambassador Yechiel Leiter is returning to Israel.

The ambassador will not join the prime minister at the UN event. He posted a statement on social media expressing gratitude to the medical team. He asked for prayers for his son's recovery.

Family history of service and loss

Neria Leiter had previously lost his brother, Moshe Yedidya, in 2023. Moshe was a company commander in the 551st Brigade. He was killed while serving in Gaza.

According to the family, Neria continued serving in the reserves after this loss. He has served hundreds of days on multiple fronts since October 7. This background adds weight to the current incident.

Several Israeli officials offered support to the Leiter family. US Ambassador Mike Huckabee stated he is standing with them. He noted their previous loss and the current threat.
