Pakistan urges US and Iran to resume diplomatic talks

Pakistan is actively urging the United States and Iran to return to the negotiating table, a position articulated by the country’s ambassador to the United Nations. As tensions flare again following a period of relative calm, Islamabad is pressing for the implementation of a memorandum of understanding that it previously helped broker. The diplomatic push comes amid renewed strikes and persistent disagreements over security in the Strait of Hormuz.
According to reports from GN geopolitics/un, the Pakistani envoy highlighted a lingering lack of trust between the two major parties as a primary obstacle to progress. While acknowledging a reluctance to fully implement the current framework, the official emphasized that Pakistan maintains high-level communication channels with both Washington and Tehran. This continued engagement is part of a broader regional mediation effort involving Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Turkey, China, and Qatar.
Diplomatic Channels Remain Open
Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, Pakistan’s ambassador to the UN, stated that the best path to a comprehensive resolution is a return to the framework established in the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding. He noted that despite setbacks, the infrastructure for dialogue remains intact. "We have open lines of communication with both parties, with both Iran and the US, and at high levels," he said, suggesting that the diplomatic groundwork laid during previous ceasefire negotiations can be leveraged to restart talks.
The ambassador declined to assign specific blame for the current stalemate, arguing that the situation is too complex to attribute to the reluctance of a single party. He pointed to Pakistan’s successful mediation in April, which resulted in a ceasefire announcement amidst heavy fighting, as evidence that diplomatic breakthroughs remain possible. "There is no reason that we cannot again bring them back to the table," he asserted, expressing hope that both sides will recognize the necessity of negotiation soon.
Security Council Role Expands
Pakistan is currently serving the final year of a two-year term as an elected member of the UN Security Council. This position places the country at the center of international efforts to maintain peace and security, allowing it to influence the agenda regarding conflicts in the Middle East. The ambassador indicated that this role reinforces Pakistan’s commitment to mediating disputes that threaten regional stability, utilizing its diplomatic leverage to push for sustainable resolutions.
The official emphasized that the Security Council’s mandate includes addressing the root causes of the confrontation between the US and Iran. By maintaining a neutral and persistent stance, Islamabad aims to provide a platform where both sides can engage without the pressure of immediate military escalation. This approach aligns with broader regional initiatives to prevent further fragmentation of diplomatic relations in the Gulf and beyond.
Concerns Over Palestinian Statehood
Shifting focus to the broader context in the region, the ambassador warned that Israeli policies in the West Bank are increasingly threatening the prospect of a two-state solution. He cited settlement expansion and settler violence as factors eroding the feasibility of Palestinian statehood. "Whatever is happening in the West Bank, it’s so evident that the Israeli policies are going in a direction where you can say that they’re hell-bent on doing away with the concept of the two-state solution," he stated.
Regarding Gaza, the envoy noted that the ceasefire agreement is not being fully respected, with continuing violations resulting in significant loss of life. He called for the international community and the UN to adopt a more assertive stance to ensure that Palestinian aspirations for self-determination are respected in accordance with international law. This dual focus on Iran-US relations and the Palestinian cause underscores the interconnected nature of regional security challenges.
