Recent political narratives have focused on Ukrainian actions as the driver of rising fuel costs, but emerging data suggests that disruptions in the Middle East are the primary factor affecting global supply chains.
U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright has recently attributed record-high gasoline prices in America to drone and missile strikes by Ukraine on Russian refineries. This assertion places significant political weight on Kyiv’s military campaigns, suggesting that these actions are the principal cause of economic strain at the pump for American consumers.
However, a broader analysis of global energy markets suggests that this explanation may be incomplete. According to analysis published by Foreign Policy, the rapid escalation of conflict in the Middle East presents a more fundamental challenge to energy security. While Ukrainian strikes impact specific production capacities, the structural disruption of trade routes in the Persian Gulf and Red Sea appears to be driving the sustained rise in benchmark crude prices and refined product costs.
Middle East Conflict Disrupts Trade
The strategic landscape has shifted significantly following the launch of military operations involving the United States and Israel against Iran six months ago. This conflict has introduced substantial volatility into the global energy trade, which had previously functioned with relative stability. The disruption is not merely a matter of reduced production but a complex logistical crisis affecting the movement of oil from its source to global markets.
Current market data reflects this tension, with global benchmark crude prices exceeding $100 a barrel and U.S. diesel prices reaching historic highs. These figures indicate a systemic issue rather than a temporary fluctuation caused by isolated refinery damage. The economic impact is felt widely, influencing not only fuel costs but also broader logistics and commodity prices across multiple sectors.
Chokepoint Traffic Remains Severely Limited
A central point of contention involves the flow of oil through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway that previously handled approximately 20 million barrels of crude and refined products daily. U.S. officials maintain that the strait remains open and that significant volumes are still transiting the area. However, independent tanker tracking data paints a more constrained picture, estimating average daily throughput at closer to 8 to 9 million barrels.
This discrepancy highlights the friction in the supply chain. The reduced volume is exacerbated by security risks, including incidents where Iranian forces have targeted tankers attempting to navigate the channel. The slow pace of recovery in transit numbers suggests that the physical and insurance-related barriers to safe passage remain high, limiting the effective capacity of this vital energy artery.
Alternative Routes Face New Threats
In an effort to mitigate risks in the Strait of Hormuz, Gulf states, led by Saudi Arabia, have relied on overland pipelines to transport oil to the Red Sea. The Saudi East-West pipeline, for instance, was operating at near-full capacity, moving about 5 million barrels daily to bypass the perilous waterway. This alternative route was intended to provide a stable flow of energy products to global markets.
However, the security environment in the Red Sea has deteriorated, threatening this bypass as well. Reports indicate that Houthi forces in Yemen have intensified attacks on shipping and have seized key coastal positions, including several islands that offer strategic vantage points for monitoring and disrupting maritime traffic. Furthermore, recent reports of attacks on the pipeline infrastructure itself and tankers near the port of Yanbu suggest that the alternatives to the Hormuz route are no longer guaranteed safe havens for energy transport.
