UN Security Council Briefing Highlights Sanctions Dispute
The UN Security Council remains deadlocked over Iran sanctions, with Beijing and Moscow blocking committee briefings and declaring the snapback measures legally void. While Western powers maintain the sanctions are active, China is urging both sides to return to the negotiating table and cease military hostilities following the expiration of their recent diplomatic window.
According to GN geopolitics/un, China’s deputy permanent representative formally rejected the validity of the snapback mechanism, arguing that the agenda item has already been terminated and that Western powers are misusing the Council to obstruct diplomatic progress. Beijing also urged the US and Iran to resume negotiations under their expired memorandum of understanding, explicitly calling for an end to military escalations such as the recent strikes on oil tankers.
